2026 Yamaha R7 Review

I found myself in sunny San Diego in March 2026 thanks to an invite from Yamaha to review the 2026 Yamaha R7! Whoa, cool! We know the R7 continues to follow a very intentional formula, aggressive sportbike styling, approachable performance (to the unwarranted disappointment of many, I'm sure), and a price that keeps it accessible (it's $9400 for 2026…cheaper than buying groceries at this point). On paper, the updates are plenty (electronics GALORE), and on the road, the 2026 R7 feels more refined and more complete than the 2022 R7 I rode some years ago…
Yamaha did not try to reinvent anything here. Instead, they focused on improving the overall riding experience without losing what made the Yamaha R7 popular in the first place. I’m pretty sure it’s one of their best selling bikes (if not the top one, it’s pretty close).
Yamaha R7 Engine Performance: The CP2 Still Delivers
The Yamaha R7 keeps the same 689cc CP2 parallel-twin engine. This engine has always been about usable power rather than peak numbers. Take that however you like…
You’re not getting the high revving explosiveness of a supersport like an R6, but you are getting strong midrange torque that actually works on the street. In traffic and everyday riding, the Yamaha R7 feels responsive and predictable. From my perspective, this is one of the strongest parts of the bike. It's not trying to compete on horsepower or be something it's not, it's built to be ridden in real conditions without your back hurting 20 minutes into the ride (flashback to riding the 2009 R1…)
2026 R7 Electronics: A Major Step Forward
The biggest upgrade on the 2026 R7 is the addition of ride-by-wire, which unlocks a full electronics suite derived from the Yamaha YZF-R1. Get ready…this includes traction control, slide control, lift control, engine brake management, and multiple ride modes like Sport, Street, Rain, and Custom….AND 4 additional track modes where you can turn ABS off.
From what I experienced, this is where the bike feels the most different. The Yamaha R7 used to feel relatively basic when it came to electronics (no modes on that 2022 version when I was first reviewing it…) but now it feels far more up-to date. There is still a slight learning curve with the controls and menu navigation. The system works well but the soft press and hard press turn signals need some getting used to, and my hand is too small to reach the mode button without letting go of the throttle. I did check with @650ib however, (he has big hands) and he doesn’t have issues reaching the mode button, so *sad face* for Lali.
Yamaha R7 Quick Shifter and Transmission Improvements
The 2026 Yamaha R7 now comes with a bi-directional quick shifter, which is a meaningful upgrade! Previously, the Yamaha R7 only supported upshifts. Now, both upshifts and downshifts feel smoother and more controlled as long as you're in the right rev ranges for them. The assist and slipper clutch helps downshifts feel smoother. It adds a layer of refinement that the is a welcome upgrade…especially with only a $200 USD increase from the 2025 R7 model.
Yamaha R7 Ergonomics and Seat Height Feel
Yamaha made small ergonomic changes to the Yamaha R7, including slightly higher bars, a shorter seat (by 5 mm), and a revised tank shape. The seat height on the 2026 R7 is 32.7 inches, the previously it was 32.9 inch, not a huge difference but I'll take it!
I'm not sure that I feel the difference from the previous gen but I do love that the footpegs were out of the way so it didn't make me straddle the bike wider than I needed to. So a wide stance wasn't taking away precious inches off my inseam. I was still on my tippy toes, but it wasn't bad.
Is the 2026 Yamaha R7 Worth It
Well, only you can decide for $9400 if it is. The 2026 Yamaha R7 is not a complete redesign, but it does not need to be. Yamaha focused on refining the experience and adding meaningful upgrades where they matter most. You get a proven engine, significantly improved electronics, and a more polished ride overall. At the same time, the aggressive ergonomics remain the same and there's several colors this year. My favorite being the breaker cyan raven…interesting color name but hey…as long as it looks good. From my perspective, the Yamaha R7 is now a more complete package. For riders who want a sportbike that works well on the street and still delivers a focused riding experience, the 2026 Yamaha R7 makes a strong case for itself.
