My Two-Year Journey with the 2019 Yamaha MT-07: A Personal Review

In 2020, I started on a new journey with the purchase of a 2019 Yamaha MT-07, a motorcycle renowned for its blend of performance, affordability, and everyday usability. After two years and countless miles, here's an personal look into my experience with this fun, torquey machine!

First Impressions and Design

The MT-07's naked design and the high-viz fluo-red wheels immediately caught my eye. I named the bike “Spicy boi” because the wheel color reminded me of a hot pepper. 🌶️😁 Its mass-forward stance, sculpted bodywork, and minimalist aesthetics give me a sense of rugged but purposeful appearance. The lightweight air scoops and aluminum side covers add to its sporty demeanor, making it a head-turner on every ride. Now, as a short rider, the tank could be narrower, and the foot pegs are positioned in a weird way that make me straddle the bike even wider than I should need to. Other than that I have minimal complaints about the design of this bike.

Engine and Performance

At the heart of the MT-07 is a 689cc liquid-cooled, inline twin-cylinder engine. This powerplant, developed under Yamaha's 'crossplane philosophy,' delivers a linear torque curve, ensuring outstanding acceleration. With a 270-degree crankshaft, the engine produces a unique exhaust note reminiscent of a V-twin, adding character to every twist of the throttle. With my Akrapovic exhaust on it, the sound is divine to my ears! The bike's maximum power output stands at 74.8 HP, with peak torque of 68 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This combination provides torquey performance, especially in the low to mid-range, making city commuting and spirited weekend rides really enjoyable!

Handling and Ride Quality

One of the standout features of the MT-07 is its lightweight and slim backbone frame. Weighing in at approximately 179 kg (wet weight), the bike feels nimble, allowing for easy maneuverability in urban settings and confidence-inspiring stability on twisty backroads. The suspension setup, is not stock on the MT. I have the Ktech Razor RR rear shock and the Ohlins Nix Cartridge Kit forks. A stiff setup for the track, but it is adjustable…if you know what you are doing. I'm getting better about understanding suspension, but it is admittedly, all a bit confusing.

Braking and Safety

Equipped with dual 282mm front disc brakes and a 245mm rear disc, the MT-07's braking performance is both reliable and responsive. The inclusion of ABS as standard enhances safety, particularly in adverse weather conditions or emergency braking scenarios. Over my two-year ownership, the brakes consistently provided ample stopping power and I've never had issues.

Comfort and Ergonomics

The MT-07's ergonomics strike a harmonious balance between sporty and comfortable. For me and my clip on handlebars, that's not the case unfortunately. During longer journeys, it does get uncomfortable to be in a more aggressive, sporty seating position. I do have the original handlebars and this is not a problem when I used those. The handlebar positioning ensures a natural grip, promoting a relaxed posture without compromising on the bike's sporty essence. But if you're wanting something more aggressive for the track, the clip-ons are the way to go.

Fuel Efficiency and Practicality

Fuel efficiency is a notable advantage of the MT-07. Throughout my ownership, I consistently achieved impressive mileage, making it an economical choice for daily commuting. The 14-liter fuel tank offers a commendable range, reducing the frequency of fuel stops during longer trips. Additionally, the bike's compact dimensions and agile handling make it adept at navigating through congested city traffic, further enhancing its practicality.

Improvements Over Previous Generations

The 2019 MT-07 introduced several refinements over its predecessors. Notably, the suspension received updates to improve ride quality and handling dynamics. The design also saw subtle tweaks, enhancing its modern appeal while retaining the core elements that made the MT-07 a favorite among riders. These improvements collectively contributed to a more polished and enjoyable riding experience.

Conclusion

Reflecting on my two-year journey with the 2019 Yamaha MT-07, it's evident why this motorcycle holds a special place in the hearts of many riders. Its blend of performance, agility, and practicality makes it a versatile companion for both new and seasoned motorcyclists. Whether navigating city streets or carving through mountain roads, the MT-07 consistently delivers an engaging and rewarding ride. For those wanting a motorcycle that has Yamaha's commitment to engineering excellence and rider enjoyment, the MT-07 stands as a testament to that legacy. I'm not surprised it's one of their best sellers.
